ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author aims to develop a framework of how an organising committee operationally evolves over time and the types of issues with which it and its stakeholders must deal. She focuses on stakeholder theory and issues management, sister theories under the corporate social responsibility banner. The author considers what literature was available in terms of organisational evolution and issues pertaining to sports events. R. E. Freeman used strategic organisational planning, systems theory and organisation theory to build his argument for a stakeholder theory of the firm. While strategic management researchers may use stakeholder theory's instrumentalist approach, some argue that the descriptive and normative core is the key to stakeholder theory, especially with the debate surrounding the impact of stakeholder management on corporate social performance. Along with stakeholder management and crisis management, issues management is seen as a proactive managerial activity where managerial involvement is high.
