ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the theoretical notion of globalisation and the global-local nexus to demonstrate how international governing bodies are increasingly becoming involved in local development-related activities, further exacerbating the power differentials inherent in globalisation. It is through this lens that we interrogate the international development agenda. It is focused often on macro-level outcomes at the expense of locally based social change. The modern sport landscape is bound up in an interconnected network of inter-dependencies with multiple dimensions and is continuously shaping and being shaped by our changing global environment. Globalisation is frequently used to describe these interconnected processes, and its definition has been debated and contested across various academic disciplines. The impacts of globalisation on the local become increasingly alarming when examining notions of identity, as individuals become bound up by global projects. While it is typically understood that the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is under the overarching influence of the Olympic umbrella.
