ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on delivery of community sport. It explores three crucial issues that have theoretical and practical significance in community sport: infrastructure for community sport, programming for community sport; and management of community sport. The chapter discusses the theoretical and practical significance of each of the issue. It followed two case studies that highlight how these issues are impacting real-life decision-making in sport organisations. The importance of local government authorities (LGAs) in providing infrastructure for community sport is also apparent when considering the impact of the natural environment on sport facilities. The concept of modified rules in particular for children has existed for over three decades; it emerged from an awareness that competitive match play, rules and structures designed for adult sport settings can reduce the enjoyment for children so much that it discourages continued participation. Some of the larger high-profile triathlon events that they choose to host are televised, which allows the City of Port Phillip to showcase the municipality.
