ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concepts, health promotion and physical activity are introduced, and the role of sport in promoting health is considered. It introduces the Challenges associated with taking action to promote health through sport. The chapter aims to engage the population in physical activity and/or to use sport as a tool to communicate key health messages. In many societies, sport participation is seen as a healthy activity if performed in safe settings. This is largely due to the established links that exist between physical activity (PA) and health. Health is a multidimensional concept that extends beyond describing one's physical state of being. It widely accepted definition, provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). Health promotion is a core function of public health. It is both practical and cost-effective in reducing the global burden of disease and in mitigating the social and economic impact of diseases.
