ABSTRACT

Everton FC player Dixie Dean walked off from a game at half time after being offended by racist comments. That was in the 1930s (FTB, 2012). More than half a century later one would like to hope that racism is no longer an issue, especially in sports. Sadly, with the lack of real monetary punishment, it is a case of game over ethics for clubs. The 1980s in particular was a rough time, especially in the UK, regarding issues around racism, and football brought the tension to the playing fields. What is interesting is that the fan groups (and clubs) who used racial abuse as a way to upset or damage an opponent in the 1980s have not changed much in the 2010s.
