In the first edition of this book, I discussed the myth of the nonaversive treatment of severe behavior, who created that myth, the lack of research supporting the myth, and who was perpetuating it (Foxx, 2005a). In another chapter in the first edition (Foxx, 2005b), I discussed the role of the myth makers and perpetuators in the 1989 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Development (CDC) on the treatment of destructive behavior. I also described my experience in 1991 at a conference of the Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) that was hosted by the Institute for Disabilities Studies of the University of Minnesota. This conference was an extension of the 1989 NIH conference and brought experts together to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of destructive behavior in developmental disabilities.
