ABSTRACT

A growing number of pediatric hospitals are opening their doors to artists and creative arts therapists. This chapter begins with a discussion of what hospitalization is like for children, viewed through the developmental framework of childhood. Acknowledging family-centered care as best practice, issues for family members also are examined. A theoretical basis for using the arts is explored, citing examples. A preparation process for creating a psychosocially sound pediatric arts program is described, including the important role of child life services in hospitals and how it relates to arts programming. The chapter concludes with challenges unique to pediatric settings.
