ABSTRACT

The Center for Collaborative Online International Learning at the State University of New York became the first such entity when it was established at Purchase College in 2006. This chapter discusses the COIL model and provides insight into its development and current state of implementation and describes the essence of the model, how and what it offers students, teachers, and institutions. Then it provides a brief description of the COIL Institute for Globally Networked Learning in the Humanities, which was the first attempt to support the development and implementation of COIL courses on a large scale and which led to many of the courses described in this chapter. This will be followed by a discussion of some of the growing pains, or challenges, that have characterized the history of COIL as a practice. Finally, the chapter reflects on the opportunities and barriers to normalizing COIL in HEIs as a means to internationalize the curriculum.
