ABSTRACT

Literacy from Scratch is an ideal way of starting the development of work in Computing because the focus of the pupil is on the actual story-telling, rather than on abstract coding. The project demands collaborative, creative, and cross-curricular work. This is essential if the narrative, the art work, the music, and the computing skills are to be completed and integrated successfully. In Prague, files sent from the UK were used both as a stimulus for creativity and as examples from which Czech pupils could learn details of successful coding practice. MirandaNet is a leading online community of teachers, dedicated to sharing best educational ICT practice at an international level. Students in Year 8 ICT lessons will explore the use of Scratch to create a piece of narrative work, by creating about ten linked scenes. It is clear that Computing in schools is developing rapidly, both in the UK and abroad, with support materials becoming available from many sources.
