ABSTRACT

Listening to the sounds of the city allows people to draw several tendencies. After presenting the methodological framework of the research, this chapter characterizes sounds in coastal zones that have experienced recent development. The urban sound spaces were approached with the goal of being representative and systematic. If the urban space is fluid and dynamic, it is also made of signposts regulations. Beyond the distinctive spaces, four elements appear transversally in the recordings: the sounds of helicopters, sirens and footsteps, words in different languages and comments on the city. At a smaller scale, the city council has led a campaign to protect and improve the urban landscape by funding the renovation and embellishment of the facades and public spaces, advertised by the slogan: "Barcelona, posa't guapa". "The opening of Barcelona to the sea" translates not only into the multiplication of panoramic landscapes, but also into the widening of the acoustic field.
