ABSTRACT

From 1976 to 2010, African American enrollment in institutions of higher education increased from 9 to 14 percent (U.S. Department of Education, 2012). There are currently 3.7 million African Americans enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities (Red and Black Inc., 2014). Despite these gains, scholars agree that given the increase in both employability and earnings potential that come with an earned college degree, enrollment rates for African Americans should be even higher in these institutions.
