ABSTRACT

The essence of this critique is to deconstruct how the recent trend of online education is fueled by a neoliberal ideology, rather than based on pedagogical consideration. It first illustrates how the neoliberal market logic has led to institutional practices of the commercialization and privatization of education. The analysis will shatter common myths such as “anytime, anywhere learning,” or that “online courses bring quality education and are cost-effective.” The last part of this chapter addresses the discriminatory impact online education may have on minority students and its potential threat to democratic education.
