ABSTRACT

Neoliberal and poverty concepts have been introduced to the discourse on schools, school policy, school achievement, and school transitions. What in fact does this mean in the framework of the educational system in the United States? What are schools doing that result in poor academic achievement, disproportionate dropout rates, and low college enrollment rates for minority and low-income students? These are the questions that we must consider to understand what is happening within our school systems. Poverty is conceptualized in a multitude of ways and it is important that we understand unequal access to education and disproportionate educational outcomes as a form of poverty for the Latino population.
