ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses ways to develop a practice framework as part of student supervision process. In particular, methods to incorporate the use of visual learning strategies to develop the practice framework are examined. The educational scaffolding for developing a framework is outlined and processes for helping students to create their own are identified. Use of visual aids such as brainstorming and metaphor, as part of the design for the framework are examined. Brainstorming and metaphor have proven to be useful devices to enhance meaningful engagement and ownership of ideas for the visual learner (Willox, Harper, Bridger, Orbach & Sarapura, 2010; Edwards & Cooper, 2010). Fostering peer generated critical reflection, reflexivity, and critical thinking within and outside of placement supervision generates a constructivist learning environment, enabling students to draw the threads of their own framework together through dialogue with others. Throughout the chapter, the conceptual ideas discussed are illustrated using personal narratives from a former student and a current student supervisor who both prepared a practice framework as part of their own professional development.
