      ABSTRACT

Cross-national web probing is in line with recent calls for mixing qualitative and quantitative methods in cross-national research. This chapter explores an overview of recent research into the use of cross-national web probing. This research has been undertaken as part of the project "Enhancing the Validity of Intercultural Comparative Surveys: The Use of Supplemental Probing Techniques in Internet Surveys". Based on the data, three research goals are pursued: testing whether the use of online access panels is appropriate for web probing, identifying ways of how best to implement probing questions online and assessing equivalence in cross-national surveys. There is potential in cross-national web probing. A follow-up project will therefore tackle existing challenges: following up with respondents who provided non-response or insufficient answers, testing methods to prevent mismatching probe answers, such as combing different probe types on one screen, and testing a chat function to gain in-depth information in a follow-up chat to a survey.
