ABSTRACT

The chapter outlines the role of knowledge and education in classical concepts of professionalism and discusses the relationship between these concepts and the idea of evidence-based practice. The results from the case study are presented and discussed. The crucial role of higher education for professional 'knowing' led many emerging professional groups, occupations such as nursing, teaching and social work, to promote systematic educational programmes in their respective professional fields. The basic idea of evidence-based practice is to develop generalized, and thus widely applicable, knowledge about what methods to use if the best results are to be achieved. This is exemplified by the Danish Social Service Agency. Education initiatives in Denmark to adopt evidence-based methods have generally come from ministries and their agencies as well as from municipalities as part of a broader movement towards evidence-based public policy.
