ABSTRACT

The Couples Coping Enhancement Training (CCET) is an evidence-based relationship education program, based upon stress and coping theory and research in couples and cognitive-behavioral methods. A significant body of research shows that everyday stress is consistently negatively associated with relationship satisfaction, quality, and stability. As compared to other programs, CCET focuses on the impact of extra-dyadic stressors on couples functioning and how couples can successfully cope together as a couple with daily hassles. The training of specific skills such as dyadic communication, dyadic problem solving, and dyadic coping is a main component of CCET. Exercises are supervised by a licensed CCET provider with a ratio of 2 to 1, allowing a profound learning of skills. Within the skills training the 3-phase method plays a particular role. A core element is the 3-phase method aiming at enhancing stress-related self-disclosure and dyadic coping. The CCET is successfully used in different Western countries, reflecting that the program is appropriate for Western cultures.
