ABSTRACT

The Relationship Enhancement (RE) model was one of the first psychoeducational skills-training programs developed to help couples and families have better relationships. Bernard Guerney, Jr. and colleagues at Pennsylvania State University developed the initial formulation of RE during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their collective work was published as Relationship Enhancement: Skill-Training Programs for Therapy, Problem Prevention, and Enrichment (Guerney, 1977). The core conviction behind the creation of RE was that the primary source of family distress was a deficit of good relationship skills rather than overt psychopathology. Hence, the goal was to develop a systematic way of teaching and helping couples

and families learn good relationship skills. The name Relationship Enhancement gave perfect expression to the desired outcome.
