ABSTRACT

The idea for researching multilingual digital storytelling arose out of concerns to do with language and literacy education in the UK context relating in particular to multilingualism and the growing role played by the digital media. The appeal of multilingual digital storytelling was that it combined the focus on language and digital communication with the creation, sharing and critiquing of personal stories. The vision behind the project had multilingualism at its core. Translanguaging for purposes of exploratory talk proved to be an important scaffolding strategy supporting learners in meeting the challenges of multimodal composition in a second language. The creation of bilingual digital stories, often with a cultural dimension, such as the Lion Dance and Moroccan Cinderella, provides a useful focal point for the involvement of parents and other family members. The Critical Connections project provides a platform for young people across a range of ages, cultures and languages to share their stories.
