ABSTRACT

The economic austerity that followed the United States sub-prime mortgage crisis, and the subsequent bail out of the banks coincided with a rise in scapegoating of migrants and ethnic minorities and particularly of Muslims. One manifestation of such racism is the emergence of the English Defence League (EDL). When it came to Peterborough's prime football space they were granted the homely privilege of automatic belonging'. In 2012 the Green Backyard launched a public campaign to be allowed to continue at its current location. It was precisely because of the Green Backyard's alternative vision for the city that the visibility provided by this specific site, close to the city centre, was so important to its founders and supporters. For many, the draw of the car boot sale is the simple pleasure of thrift and finding a good bargain. For others, it can be the basis of a livelihood cobbled together out of informal economies of recirculation.
