ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the London 2012 Volunteer Programme. It discusses the first vital phase of the programme: recruitment, selection and training of volunteers. The chapter focuses on the interaction between organisational and individual levels. At the organisational level, it evaluates how the Volunteer Programme was set up and delivered within a broader organisational environment. At the individual level, it aims to examine how the Programme was received by volunteers and whether the volunteers experiences matched the stated objectives. Orientation aimed at helping volunteers understand how they can contribute to the event and ideals of the Games. Role-specific training consisted of two parts: first, operational knowledge needed to perform the roles and training in customer service. The second part of the training was planned to be more role-specific and lasted from hours to days. Leadership training was set to equip team leaders with leadership and problem-solving skills as they were given increased responsibility with regard to managing the tasks volunteers.
