ABSTRACT

In the nineteenth year of the Jianyuan reign, the monk Samghadeva from Kasmir who was good at reciting Abhidharma Jnanaprasthana-sastra, arrived in Chang'an and was invited by the monk Fa He to recite it for translation. The monk Zhu Fonian rendered it into Chinese; the monks Hui Li and Seng Mao recorded it in writing, and Fa He himself checked for coherence and consistency. The process started on the twentieth day of the fourth month, and was completed on the twenty-third day of the tenth month. Upon editing the draft, it was found that there were quite a lot of repetitive incantations, some desirable and necessary and others not so. Some of these repetitions related to content and others to style. Fa He and the author found them unacceptable. Therefore they worked on the version tirelessly again for forty-six days and completed the editing.
