ABSTRACT

Hui Jiao, a monk who lived through the Southern Liang Dynasty, was a native of Huiji, which was in his day an administrative district south of Hangzhou Bay. By Hui Jiao's time, a rich tradition of Buddhist scholarship and religious activity had already been established in Huiji, and Buddhism increasingly prospered during the Liang Dynasty. Among his works were A Commentary on the Nirva Sutra, A Commentary on the Brahma Net Sutra and the Biographies of Eminent Monks. The Biographies of Eminent Monks, Hui Jiao's best known work, contains material collected by Hui Jiao on eminent monks who lived in the period between the tenth year of the Yongping reign of the Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty and the eighteenth year of the Tianjian reign of the Southern Liang Dynasty. Hui Jiao enriched Chinese discourse on Buddhist sutra translation by expanding its scope of discussion to include topics such as rhythm, melody and music.
