ABSTRACT

The study of Anglicisms at a lexical, morphosyntactic and textual level of linguistic analysis has recently attracted considerable interest owing to the status of English as an international lingua franca. The need to monitor and describe the influence of English through comparative linguistics and lexicography is felt particularly in Europe, in view of the exigency to harmonize a national with a transnational identity as well as promote multilingualism, cultural diversity, mutual intelligibility and cultural unity. The present volume makes a valuable contribution to this growing area of enquiry. It includes a selection of papers presented at the seminar The Anglicization of European Lexis, which was held in Turin (Italy) in August 2010 during the 10th International Conference of the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE). The aim of the seminar was to discuss past and current research into lexical borrowing from English to western and eastern European languages and compare approaches, methodologies and recent findings.
