ABSTRACT

In the last few decades, Vietnam has seen rapid economic development and an explosion in commercial, technological and cultural exchanges with other parts of the world. This chapter highlights the current state of the art in English language education (ELE) in Vietnam. It focuses on the secondary level of education, which is the forefront of the most recent ELE innovation that affects the largest number of English language learners in the country and has a vital role to play in raising the national level of English proficiency. The chapter begins with a schematic description of the formal education system and the structure of administration that supports it with a view to providing the context in which ELE operates. It provides description of the most recent innovation in ELE, the Foreign Languages Project 2020. The chapter concludes with suggestions on how innovations should be developed and enacted for ELE in Vietnam to take off.
