ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the teaching of English at secondary schools, and traces significant policy shifts in history that have shaped the English Language Teaching (ELT) landscape in Malaysia. It outlines specific initiatives taken today that reflect the impact of globalisation on English Language Education in Malaysia. The chapter also focuses on how globalisation has had an impact on ELT in Malaysian secondary schools. It illustrates how the ESL secondary school classroom has become an important site for preparing the next generation of Malaysians to face the challenges of globalisation. The chapter further traces the development of ELT in Malaysia since pre-independence. It considers specific initiatives that have been introduced more recently to ESL classrooms in secondary schools that reflect the nation's determination in equipping a generation of Malaysians with competency in the English language and the ability to face the challenges of globalisation.
