ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the theoretical debates that have shaped academic thinking about the body and their application to sport. It provides possible ways to move thinking forward in poststructuralism, phenomenology and history through the incorporation of embodied approaches. The book explores some different aspects of embodiment and how it is possible to make sense of physical activities that might take an individual 'out of the body' and create a feeling of transcendence. It highlights how research relating to school-based physical education has neglected questions about what forms of bodily movement practices were developed and practised historically. The book also explores the embodied practices in korfball. It incorporates a dance-based research project, 'Living Jobs', as a case study to provide examples of the issues raised and addressed when attempting to encounter research from this particular embodied perspective.
