ABSTRACT

The use of digital video cameras to conduct research has proven to be effective at recording, stimulating recall, evoking and enacting experiential knowledge cognitive, spatial, corporeal, material, sensory, emotional and affective of social worlds and people's lives. The camera enables 'point-of-view' vision when attached to parts of the body, as well as sporting equipment and vehicles. The camera proves effective at picking up what turns out to be a vast array of facial expressions: smiles, grimaces, and raised eyebrows. It also proves effective at recording variations in bodily rhythms and stimulating recall about what contributes to those variations. The GoProTM camera is now a ubiquitous technology in surfing culture. Enthusiasts upload many hours of footage to the internet. Surfing has an attendant 'enthusiast media'. The wearable digital video camera is effective at documenting, evoking and enacting emotional and affective experiences of masculinity by men-who-surf.
