ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the gender perceptions of children that play korfball. It focuses on emerging themes that demonstrate the embodied experiences of junior korfball players. Linked to the interaction between players, junior korfball participants often referred to the non-contact aspect of the game as being something that made it preferable to sports that accepted, or encouraged, physical contact. Within the whole package of korfball, players explained that being vocal and interacting with other players was a very important factor in korfball. The experiences encountered whilst in the field, along with the interview data, demonstrated how there were certain ways to perform korfball. There were specific attributes that were seen to be valuable for korfball players, and these attributes were often assigned to particular players. Being able to score goals and shoot accurately was an attribute that meant players could be successful korfball players.
