ABSTRACT

‘No man is an island’. Almost everybody lives in a community environment, one way or the other. As much as people can, they try to reside in a community of their own choice. This choice is made to a certain extent according to the attachment people have towards that neighbourhood and the physical environment. The extent of attachment residents feel towards their community and how this attachment affects their housing choice are measured in this chapter. We set out to analyze the factors affecting residents’ attachment to their housing community in Hong Kong based on a conceptual framework of ‘Community Quotient’ (CQ). By adopting the Analytic Hierarchy Process to measure the appropriate weighting of factors regarding the attachment level among residents, we hope to contribute to the discussion of why people move to (or stay in) a certain housing community in Hong Kong.
