ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the types of vulnerabilities of people living in communities that experience flooding and explores whether these vulnerabilities having a relationship with migration. Although some studies have assessed the vulnerabilities of people who have been affected due to the floods, particularly in the state of Johor, most of these studies were confined to examining socioeconomic impact assessment, livelihood change, public health preparedness or the performance assessment of disaster management viewpoints. Flooding in Malaysia includes both riverine flooding and coastal flooding. A hidden aspect of the flooding has been its impact on migrant populations that are resident in Johor. Malaysia's urban and industrial areas have become a destination of extremely mobile populations originating from other parts of the country, as well as from abroad. Considering the aforementioned aspects, the chapter focuses on different village communities of the Segamat district to examine the experience of floods and to identify different types of vulnerabilities faced by migrants and local people.
