ABSTRACT

As in many other countries, the rise of heavy metal in France was notable in the 1970s, both in economic and in cultural terms. The chapter begins by presenting the band, contextualizing its birth and development. It shows that Trust, from its early days, was in contact with players of the world of metal, while setting itself apart with some singular characteristics. The chapter analyzes why the public positioning of Trust, as reflected in the lyrics of their songs and confirmed by the statements made by their singer in the press, was first an asset for the band, before becoming a burden. The media talked about the currents of hard rock and heavy metal as a developing culture that was underreported in the mainstream press and in particular in rock magazines. In hindsight, the message of Trust appears out of synch with the evolution of the heavy metal scene that was then working to become more autonomous.
