ABSTRACT

The origins of cricket are fundamentally political. In 1747, matches between Kent and England were postponed due to players’ commitments in the General Election. British parliamentarians were the rst to write the laws (note laws, not rules) of cricket (Malcolm 2013) and the historical governing body of cricket in Britain, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), was known as the “Parliament House of Cricket” due both to its authority in the game and the number of members who were politicians (Bradley 1990).
