ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the rich source of data provided by documents of life. First, the nature and broad range of documents of life are discussed, considering the rationale for their use in sport and exercise research. Next, this chapter focuses specifically on two prominent documents of life: autobiographies and diaries. The strengths of each of these documents of life are outlined, as well as considering their current use in sport and exercise research. While each provides a valuable source of information, it is argued that there are also some common misunderstandings. Consequently, the chapter outlines the challenges associated with using diaries and autobiographies and how these challenges may be addressed. Finally, the chapter concludes by considering future research trajectories using documents of life.
