ABSTRACT

Elephant Energy is a non-profit organization that distributes solar-powered lights and chargers to off-grid customers via a network of shops and rural sales agents in Namibia, Africa. Its products, which include a battery-powered LED light charged by a solar panel the size of a notebook, cost between $10 and $50 and “pay for themselves” in a few short months by reducing expenditures on candles and kerosene. With modern lighting, children can study at night, shops can stay open later, and clinics can operate. Further, many solar lights charge cell phones, providing access to information in the most remote areas in Africa.
