While coediting this book, Leith retired from the Tokyo Institute of Technology that provided a wonderful and supportive working environment over the past 11 years, and moved back to Australia. The consistent support from Tokyo Tech colleagues must be acknowledged here, as well as the unexpected but most welcome granting of the title Emeritus, which has permitted an ongoing relationship with the university. During the various moves to his present home in Sydney, when at times he was without books and living out of a suitcase (lodging in various dwellings thanks to the generosity of friends), Rachael and our Routledge editor Lucy McClune were strongly supportive with time and understanding. Heartfelt thanks to you both! In respect of his chapter, Leith would also like to acknowledge the support of the Maekawa and Kawada families, who so generously gave permission for translations. Finally, as always, Leith wishes to thank his wife Sachiko, who has always stood by him, and who was, and remains, his most exacting reader.
