ABSTRACT

During the past decades, land has played a central role in Vietnamese society. This chapter overviews land reforms and key issues involving land during the past decades, including land tenure before 1980s, land reforms and land issues since 1980s, land appropriation, resistance and livelihood changes over time. Through an analysis of key issues about land, the chapter emphasizes that in contemporary Vietnamese society, while land relations have been transformed radically, land continues to be of great importance to both the state and society, and it is the key institution that the party and state want to control.
