ABSTRACT

“Sunny” was an international student at a large state university in California. She had come to the United States from China to pursue a master’s degree in social work. Unfortunately, she failed the university’s writing proficiency examination upon entrance and was required to take a remedial writing course for multilingual students who had failed the exam. Some weeks into the course, she was asked to write an in-class midterm on the topic of “single-sex schools,” based upon a newspaper article the class had read.
