ABSTRACT
Because of a two-year immersion experience in South Korea and in the Korean language as a young man, I chose to use Korean to fulfill one of my graduate school foreign language requirements. At that time, in the early 1980s, it was possible to test out of Korean classes by coming to some proficiency testing arrangement with a Korean language professor at my university. As such, he asked me to find an article in linguistics written in Korean and translate it into English. I dutifully scoured the library and found only one Korean language linguistics journal from which I randomly chose an article. About a month later, after spending weeks armed with an inadequate dictionary laboriously trying to drag meaning out of each sentence, I presented my finished translation to the professor with a copy of the original from which he would gauge the accuracy of my translation. I eventually met with him to hear his verdict.
