ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the failure of the people of old Sudan to realize Garang's cherished dream to maintain the unity of the country under a new political dispensation or united 'New Sudan'. It discusses the long and futile dream of elites from the Northern part of the old Sudan, both civilian and military, to mould a united country under the banner of Arabism and Islam. The chapter then analyses the idea of a united 'New Sudan', before examining the rejection of the notion of a united 'New Sudan' by a group of rebel leaders after the split of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) in 1991. It then discusses the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and acceptance of self-determination for the people of Southern Sudan. The chapter then tackles the birth of the Republic of South Sudan, which marked the death of the notion of a united 'New Sudan' in Southern Sudan.
