ABSTRACT

This chapter is aimed primarily at those who have recently entered the world of higher education in the UK as members of academic staff, although it will also be highly relevant to others joining in professional services roles. It will consider, in particular, the role of the university teacher, recognising that in different institutions this will vary according to mission and that it will be part of a complex and variable range of responsibilities that are best collectively described as academic practice. The chapter will also have much to offer more experienced staff coming back into the world of higher education having worked in industry, public service or the professions.
