ABSTRACT
An urbanising world requires major policy and public participation initiatives to make urban resource use compatible with the world's ecosystems. Metropolitan Adelaide has actively adopted this agenda and is widely recognised as a pioneering regenerative city region. A large proportion of Adelaide's organic waste is composted by one company, Jefferies. Public attitudes to resource use have been strongly influenced by vigorous public information campaigns which link people's resource use and climate change. Energy efficiency over the entire lifecycle of a building is the single most important goal of both new sustainable architecture and retrofitting of old buildings. The City of Copenhagen wants to spearhead electric vehicles (EVs) as an alternative to gasoline and diesel. The city of Oakland has set a goal of zero waste in its 2006 strategic plan, effectively changing a linear metabolism into a circular approach, which means initiating comprehensive policy frameworks. Singapore has implemented a highly innovative integrated water resource management programmer (IWRM).
