ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the cases of medical institutions in Canada that execute environment adaptation strategies as exploitations to adapt to changing environments, and that execute environment creation strategies as explorations to create new environments. Canadian Blood Services (CBS) is an organization that operates its businesses across Canada and stands at the center of a health support ecosystem. In the beginning of the 1990s, there was a major shakeup of the hospitals in Toronto, Ontario Province. CBS has engaged in BSC deployment and staff training while partnering with three or four other Canadian companies that already have experience in implementing BSC. CBS staff made field trips to observe private companies, financial institutions and insurance companies using BSC both inside and outside of Canada. These visits covered the Hospital for Sick Children in Ontario Province, and the University Health Network (UHN).
