ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the development of the software industry in Malta and how and why, the e-gaming sector has grown rapidly, contributing substantially to the economy. Software development in Malta did not see its humble beginnings until the late 1970s, when a handful of computer service companies were set up to offer time-sharing and turnkey solutions. Software-related statistics, such as the number of software companies operating in Malta in any given year. In comparison to other countries, the top software firms operating in Malta are small. In Malta the new telecommunications infrastructure has facilitated the growth of the IT industry; it has also enabled foreign companies to take up e-gaming. The software industry is a tribute to entrepreneurship, to those who, in spite of-or as a result of-Malta's small size have quickly responded to market opportunities and allowed the software industry and the e-gaming sector to grow to the size they now command.
