ABSTRACT

This chapter considers in more detail the challenges and potential solutions to its adoption from the education perspective for students in both the education and practice settings but also among clinicians in the 'real world' of practice. Particular attention will be given to: developing the new workforce, culture in practice, confidence of the individual, and resource constraints within the organization. In spite of exposure to the concept of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) during nurse's prequalifying preparation and, in some institutions, its application as a foundation to all clinical skills teaching, the culture of the organization in the practice arena will significantly influence their ability to implement such a philosophy. As previously acknowledged, many higher education institutions require their teaching staff to achieve doctoral status as compulsory and, through their own education, nurse educators are beginning to overcome the tendency to anti-intel-lectualism and to promote confidence in research through their own increasing competence and credibility.
