ABSTRACT

Educating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mainstream schools places them at very high risk of experiencing bullying. Bullying prevention initiatives tailored for children with ASD are in the very early stages of development. Programs need to be targeted at students with ASD and the broader school community, and should consider the experiences of parents of children with ASD, who may also experience bullying. A produced video resource package to support interventions is described. The impact of bullying in schools on the mental health and wellbeing of young people diagnosed with ASD is significant and there is an ongoing need to trial, implement and evaluate programs for their effectiveness and usefulness. Bullying is a particularly destructive form of aggression, involving repeated physical or psychological intimidation or attack intended to cause fear, distress or harm, involving an imbalance of power in favour of the perpetrator.
