ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the role of new technologies in supporting young people with mental health issues in schools. There are various barriers to young people's help-seeking for mental health difficulties. School-based e-resources have the potential to give better access to mental health information, services and support for adolescents. However, much remains to be done to ensure that such resources are safe, effective and confidential. E-resources made available through schools have the potential to address shortfalls in young people's access to help for mental health problems. There is nevertheless a range of challenges to the use of such technology that need to be addressed to ensure effectiveness, online safety and confidentiality. School-based interventions have typically been provided in two main ways: universally, in order to promote emotional resilience and prevent the development of mental health disorders; and in a targeted way, focusing upon those at increased risk of developing mental health problems or displaying mild/moderate problems.
