ABSTRACT

Achieving sustainable development requires the involvement of multiple and diverse public and private stakeholders. Active and participatory management plans are mandatory in order to effectively address mobility issues, especially in insular territories. A Management Plan (MP) is a tool to guide managers and other interested parties so that they might follow a logical decision-making process both today and in the future. Involving a variety of stakeholders in planning and management brings important benefits: increased sense of 'ownership', greater public involvement in decision-making and stronger links between conservation and development. This promotes communication that allows the identification and resolution of problems. This chapter presents the stakeholder engagement-based methodological approach that was applied and developed for the Sustainable Mobility Plan of Ponta Delgada City (SMPPD). Outcomes and assessment of the current development status of SMPPD are also described in the chapter. The experience of the SMPPD proved that involving stakeholders in sustainable transport planning is possible and can provide more cost-effective solutions.
