ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two services, Bus Alpin and Alpen Taxi in Swiss mountain regions, in detail, presenting their concepts and business models, analysing their effects on the environment, society and the economy, investigating the main reasons of their success and eventually discussing the possibility to transfer the concepts of the two initiatives to other contexts. In remote tourism areas not served by public transport, this services may enable visitors to reach popular spots without the need of a private vehicle. The basic conditions for establishing Bus Alpin or Alpen Taxi services are found in many places in the Alps and beyond: popular tourist attractions, basic organisational structures, a clear commitment to sustainable tourism, lack of coverage by public and/or private transport and potential sponsors at the local level. In the future, services like Bus Alpin and AlpenTaxi and online platforms like SchweizMobil should be increasingly integrated to give tourists worldwide the possibility to enjoy car-free vacations in remote natural contexts.
