ABSTRACT

Across sub-Saharan Africa, there is a growing consensus that securing land rights for women is important for reducing poverty, ensuring household food security and the sustainable use of natural assets, and advancing equality between women and men (FAO, 2013; Giovarelli et al., 2013; AUC, 2010). Although most agree that the pervasive issue of women’s insecure land rights within customary tenure systems is a major barrier to achieving equality and economic development in the region (UN-Women, 2013; FAO, 2011), debate surrounding how to strengthen women’s land rights within customary systems continues.
